“Rear Window” Typography

“Rear Window” Titles [Time Based Type] from Nathan Boyd on Vimeo.

For my final project for my Time Based Type class, we were given the choice of 3 Alfred Hitchcock movies to recreate the title sequence. Rear Window being my favorite of the few, it was my first pick. I wanted to use real footage rather than mostly 2D post work, so I shot a lot of content myself and worked with simple compositing of text onto the video. The music choice was also something that took a bit of thought, but I wanted the piece to pay homage to the classic Hitchcock horror sound.

Versus Styleframe #1

For my Concepts & Storyboards class at SCAD, we were assigned a network ID project. We were able to choose from either QVC, M6 Music, BBC World News, or Versus. As you can see, I chose the last one in the list.

We were tasked with producing a single concept with two different design directions. One thing I learned in that class is that a concept should never specify the design details. It should explain the idea that you want to communicate, not dictate the execution. The final frames should be able to emphasize the content and quality of the programming of each network. My final concept statement:

Concept:

My objective is to reconnect the viewer with the adventure present in the sports. Through dramatic, saturated colors and exaggerations of specific elements, the impact of their HD dynamic content is brought into focus. The ads will also reinvigorate the less customary and less popular sports with the energy associated with the more mainstream content.

Landing on this concept really helped push me in the right direction. From here, I decided to focus on two of the sports on the network that were stereotypically less action packed than the standard NHL & College Football type of content. I chose to focus on their Cycling and Fishing programming. Here are closer views of the single styleframe I ended up creating to promote the network’s cycling programming.
