Green Screen + 3D Camera Tracking

Motion Tech 1 :: Project 4 – Green Screen Footage from Nathan Boyd on Vimeo.

This is my first school-related use of the green screen in my Motion Tech 1 class. I filmed my pal Jordan Taylor walking towards the camera on the green screen and keyed him into the environment footage. To get the pieces to match, I used a tool called PFHoe to track the camera in 3D space so I could place the digital elements into the scene while following the natural movement of the handheld camera through After Effects.

All the additional elements were created within After Effects and make heavy use of the 3D layer and lighting support.

Green Screen:

Rather than wasting all the pixels on the sides of my talent since he was just walking in the middle of the green screen, I rotated the camera to give me more vertical lines of resolution in the footage for a better quality key in post.

“West” Short Film Concept + Final Titles

“West” Title Sequence Motion Test from Nathan Boyd on Vimeo.

Above you can see the partial title sequence I produced as a concept and style test for my friend Troy Zapata’s senior film, “West.”

Troy and I discussed design directions for the title sequence and he had a fairly clear image in his mind of the credits interacting with polaroids as well as a specific audio track. I cranked out the above sample and he was extremely happy with the execution. However, after many unavoidable delays, the final sequence suffered from extreme time constraints and a tempo change of the audio track. That being said, I think the final version came out an overall success, but it also served as a lesson in time management for myself. After working on this project I realized the importance of planning specific milestone dates for yourself and for others to get you assets on time.

The Final Execution:

In the end with all the delays, I produced this in the 6 hours before the film premiered. For that timeframe, I think it is fairly successful.
